Whether you’re a first time mommy-to-be or have the beginnings of your own baseball team at home, I’m here to tell you that dressing your bump can be SO much fun and maternity fashions have never been more on-trend.
I remember the flurry of mixed emotions about my growing belly and the need for the dreaded larger sizes with my first pregnancy like it was yesterday. Luckily for me, my husband sensed my apprehension and tagged along to help turn my first bump shopping trip into an amazing experience. I left Motherhood Maternity at Tanger never feeling more beautiful and feminine IN. MY. LIFE. For the record, I highly recommend enlisting the services of your personal pregnancy cheerleader(s). But back to my original point…
It’s perfectly normal to be anxious about shopping for maternity attire, no matter how excited you are for your future little. It happens to all of us and is part of the rite of passage into motherhood.
So, if your best accessory this fall will be your growing baby bump, I have some tips for building a fashionable and comfortable maternity wardrobe.
#1 Invest in Staple Pieces
Wardrobe staples like leggings, jeans (in a variety of styles) and versatile dresses are a must when you’re preggers. You will LIVE in these, so it’s best to build your collection with key pieces early on that you can customize and accessorize along the way.
#2 Layers Are Your BFF
The temps may be cooler this fall but you’ll likely stay HOT throughout the entire pregnancy. Layers allow you to dress up those staple fashions but shed the non-essentials when your internal temp is rising.
Plus, this is the PERFECT way to make use of blazers, denim jackets, scarves and other fun and trendy fall accessories already in your closet.
#3 Be Adventurous
Pregnancy is one of the few times you can wear things like horizontal stripes and empire waistlines without an ounce of hesitation. If there’s a new trend or even a last season look that you were dying to try but weren’t quite sure you could pull off, DO IT and ROCK IT!
Be that daring, confident, hot momma because you ARE and you totally deserve to still turn heads when you walk by.
#4 It Doesn’t HAVE to be Maternity
There are so many bump-friendly fashions available right now that you don’t have to shop specifically for maternity labels. A flowy blouse or maxi dress with a cardigan and skinny belt works perfectly for emerging bumps. Just buy a size up from your pre-pregnancy size if you’re not quite ready to commit to maternity labels.
And remember the shirtdress that I was raving about a few weeks ago? GREAT for bump-bearing mommas!
#5 Plan for Post-Baby
Chances are you’ll still be sporting your maternity clothes for several months postpartum. Think ahead to the level of comfort and functionality you’ll need at home or when you return to the office, and look for styles that will work beyond the pregnancy.
Confession: I still wear some of my Motherhood Maternity tops from time to time because I love them so much, and they’re so stylish that it’s not obvious they’re maternity.
