Holy closets! Talk about intimidating. All of my mom friends have been chatting about how excited they are that it’s finally warming up – but you know what that means – Spring Cleaning. It’s finally time to transition from one wardrobe to the next, times three for the whole fam. If I’m being completely honest, this isn’t the most exciting task on my to-do list for the week, but I’ve found a few ways to ease the pain from season to season and make a little more room for Tanger spring finds.
Want to hear something a little crazy… this even makes for a fun date night! Yes, I said it. Just give it a shot and you’ll love the time spent with your loved one behind closed doors and feel pretty accomplished afterwards. Here are a few quick and easy #TangerTips to getting your closets prepped for spring.
Tip No. 1 – Spring Cleaning
Actually take the time to sift through item by item and set aside pieces that you, your husband or the kids haven’t worn in a few years – or outgrown (kids and husband included). We all have those items with the price tags still on them. If that’s the case – it’s time to go!! Don’t forget about the drawers… the dreaded, over-stuffed drawers. Remove anything your family no longer wears and add it to one of three piles – trash, keep or donate!
Note: This should be a very strategic step. You don’t want to get rid of anything that any of you could easily repurpose next season, but please be honest with yourself. You don’t want to get stuck in the trap again!
Tip No. 2 – Donation Station
Find a basket or bag that can live in your closet or another area of your home year-round and tag it as the Donation Station. This designated space will make it easy to keep your wardrobes sorted out. When the basket or bag is full, take it to your favorite charity. Make sure the whole family knows where to find the Donation Station and the purpose of the basket or bag. It will help keep everyone organized and save you time in the long run. And with the rate at which our kids grow, it will be full in no time.
Tip No. 3 – Backwards Hangers
People are starting to pick up on my long-time hanger trick. Once you’ve narrowed down the items that are going to stay, go through and flip all of the hangers backwards. As items are worn and washed, flip the hangers back the correct way. This will help you to see what is actually being worn and either promote use of the Donation Station or encourage everyone to explore wearing other pieces more regularly. When the next season comes, it’ll be easy to identify the items that didn’t get any love.
Tip No. 4 – Organize by Category
Many moms preach color coding, but organizing my families’ closets by category (shirts, pants, skirts and dresses, etc.) saves time with putting together a head-to-toe look. Place the items everyone goes to most (for me, it’s blouses) in the space that’s easiest to access. You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to sift through the racks and how much time this saves!
Tip No. 5 – Show It Off
Lastly, show off your new, organized, family dream closets and pass these tips along to your friends and other busy moms. Share with me using #TangerMom.
