The absolute best way to build a great wardrobe and make your money go further is to invest in a foundation of timeless base pieces. Your seasonless staples will become a frame for your favorite trend pieces from year to year. I believe that the best basics are neutral, so today I’m covering must-have pieces in black, one of spring’s trendiest colors. And most importantly, some of my tips and tricks on how to SAVE money without sacrificing style!
Before I dive in, it’s important to understand that owning the right base pieces isn’t just about looking great, it’s also about saving money in the long run by investing in quality pieces that last. I know how easy it is to fall in love with a price tag on that $4 everyday basic, but in order to look and feel your best, you’ve got to invest – you deserve it!
So, here we go – The 4 timeless black pieces for everyone’s wardrobe!
Black Denim Jeans
What is better than a great pair of jeans? Seriously, everyone should own a pair of classic black jeans. I usually find my perfect fit at Levi’s Outlet at Tanger Outlets. A good pair of pants is such a staple in my wardrobe. Think about it, your jeans are the foundation of your entire look, so it is so much more important to have one pair of rocking jeans that you feel fabulous in than 3 pairs of cheaper styles that fall apart. I typically plan to spend about $50 – $100 at Levi’s on my classic jeans.
Tip: Be sure to wash them inside out and in cold water to maintain the rich color.

A Black Trench Coat
Trench coats look good on almost every body type and have been in style since all of us can remember. They’re functional, flattering and as timeless as it gets! Of course, I love the versatility of my black trench. When I’m looking for coats I aim for rich neutrals so I look sleek on the street if I’m bundled up. Think classic details (no over-sized buttons or lapels) and a durable tie at the waist to flatter your figure. A black trench coat is easy to wear with pants, a skirt or a dress. In fact, sometimes I like to leave my coat open to show off my outfit when I am feeling sassy.
I found my black trench from Banana Republic Factory Store for a total steal. I purchased it almost 5 years ago and still wear it regularly. A good quality trench will cost you anywhere from $100 – $300. BUT it is so nice to have a Tanger Outlets close by – you can pick up this beauty for 50-70% off full prices!

Little Black Dress
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times… every woman should own a little black dress (LBD)! It’s the most versatile piece in any female’s wardrobe – it can be dressed up for a date, worn to work or paired down for a casual look. It’s the go-to “when in doubt” item and it always looks sharp and fashionable. My best tip when shopping for the perfect LBD is to pay attention to the length. A knee-length option (give or take an inch) will allow the most versatility with shoes – looking good with heels or flats! Go for a sheath fit and avoid too much embellishment. Instead, add personality with your accessories!
One thing I just love about shopping outlet is being able to shop with the savings. Say I planned to spend $250 on the perfect date night look, but found a great new LBD for $120 at the Calvin Klein outlet. That means I still have $130 to spend on shoes, and that great statement necklace from Banana Republic! It’s all about shopping sales and taking advantage of extra discounts and savings! Next time you visit Tanger Outlets, stop by shopper services and pick up a coupon book. They’re only $5 and have coupons to so many of my favorite shops. It is the easiest way to save an extra $10 here, or an extra 20% there on top of outlet prices.

A Black Blazer
Oh the blazer! The versatility of a classic black blazer is unrivaled. The perfect blazer can be worn in the office, out on the town, or even over jeans for a casual look. It’s the fastest way to look put together and polished – something every woman needs! If you’re in the market for a new black blazer, pay close attention to the length. A blazer that hits right at the hip is the more classic fit and longer = trendier. Also, look in the mirror and make sure that you can still see your shape. It is important to make sure you’re going to feel like a star when you wear it out.
Tip: Give yourself a hug in the dressing room. 😉 Not only do you deserve it, but it’ll tell you if the shoulders are the right fit. It shouldn’t be too restrictive.
I love heading straight to J.Crew Factory when I am searching for a great blazer. They have classic looks that are typically about $50 – $100! You’ll feel like a million bucks in a piece that fits you perfectly, even if you spent half of what you were expecting to!
Now, time to save! I’m all about a good deal and love hearing about yours. Comment below and tell me all about your latest bargain hunt and black staple haul.
