The beach is calling my name and this season’s designers aren’t helping me hold back much. Resort wear is at an all-time high and the fashions are hotter than ever! We’ve seen nautical influences in beach attire and home decor for years, but always done in a way that was pretty expected. This year, designers put a modern twist on maritime styles. It’s a trend that will make a statement this spring and translate well into summer.
This year’s nautical trend is more than the striped shirtdress. It’s not just an espadrille or a tote with a rope handle. It’s all about the color and texture of the sea and it’s surroundings. Think clean shapes, but unexpected details. Nautical looks can be made effortlessly, or simply refreshed when the following elements are taken into consideration.
There’s usually only one color that people associate with the nautical trend – blue. Imagine the crystal waters of the Bahamas or even the deep shores of the mediterranean. They all reflect breathtaking and unique tones of blue that put you in a trance. Look for varying shades of this season’s aquatic colors, rather than just navy. Remember, there’s a whole ocean of options too. Don’t be afraid to pair statement blues with sand tones or the browns and greys found in a cliffside. My favorite splash of color is red. You can find similar looks to this gorgeous jacket at SAKS OFF Fifth and the comfortable boat shoe from Cole Haan.
Eyelet textures or laser-cut details (even light leathers) embody the ease of the nautical trend. Traditional, but modern. A little old school, but somewhat daring. These beachy textures will rival your go-to linens any day of the week. I like to call these casual coordinates and I’m loving this striped, stitch skirt from J.Crew Factory.
You’ll see a lot of traditional tanks and blouses on the shelves this spring, but don’t be fooled into buying the same seasonal staples you purchase year after year. Look for updates to key pieces, like exposed shoulders, cut-outs, or other unusual shapes. All of this adds interest to what can otherwise come off as an easy breezy, not so interesting look.
If done right, shopping for nautical trend pieces should invigorate the senses. Visit your nearest Tanger Outlet center to find similar designer fashions at what I like to call “real life” prices. Let me know how you plan to pull of this beachy trend… I want to see pictures – just know that you’ll be feeding my travel bug and wanderlust! 😉
