If there’s one thing I love decorating more than a nursery, it’s a “big kid” room. We’re still about six months away from transitioning our little girl into her big girl room, but I like to start dreaming up spaces long before it’s time to spring into action.
First, how do you know when your little one is ready to transition out of his or her crib (the main driver of the big kid room)?
- Has your kiddo made a jailbreak from the crib? We’ve got a climber in our house. She literally will climb on everything and anything. So far, she hasn’t shown interest in climbing out of her crib, but the moment she does we know a crib will no longer be the safest bet.
- Your child is OK being unsupervised (at least in a baby-proofed room). We’re not there yet. But, it’s a big question to ask yourself before it’s time for a toddler bed. There’s no stopping them from getting out and playing tea party at 1 a.m.
- Your not-so-little baby asks for a big kid bed. Maybe your little one wants a bed like her big brother’s? If he or she is old enough to ask for it, it may be time to entertain the idea!
As always in the world of parenting, you have to do what’s right for you and your family – and whenever you make the switch just know there is plenty of adorable big kid room inspo to choose from!
We’re seeing stripes in our future. I want to design a room that our little girl will be happy in for many years to come – and as we’ve learned with stripes and fashion, the look is here to stay.
Here are some of my current favorite designs:

The next phase of this design challenge will be making sure the room has ample storage. As all parents know, as a child grows, so does their toy collection! At the end of the day, I want to be sure we can neatly tuck away all toys and make the room ready for sweet dreams.
We’ve brought in a local closet designer to help us tackle her small reach-in closet. I’m very much looking forward to the “after” product. This is what we’re striving for:
