Pool parties, cookouts, summer camps, vacations and a flurry of other social events promise to fill up our already busy calendars but, let’s face it, that’s how the best memories are made. Right?
Keeping up with all of these activities can be a chore but, if you’re like me, you’ll stop at nothing to pull off the role of party planner, rock star hostess and super mom while still looking fab and, added bonus, making it look effortless.
I’ve put together a list of the best summer tips and accessories to help keep you mommas organized, trendy and sane, whether you’re hosting a dinner party or planning family adventures that will fill your social feeds and make your friends oh so envious.
1. Hostess with the Mostess: When I commit to hosting a party, I want it to be perfectly planned and every detail to be “Insta-worthy”. Before planning your first dinner party of the season, opt for an outdoor tableware upgrade to really add some punch to your tablescapes. Fun, colorful, outdoor-friendly plates, servingware and stemware really stand out without a lot of extra effort for both everyday hosting and special occasions. West Elm has a great collection of outdoor entertaining options right now.
It’s also a good idea to plan activities to occupy the kids and allow the grown-ups some much-needed social interaction. These can be super easy and simple to set up or even create. Check out this cool DIY tic tac toe option that looks completely Pottery Barn inspired. The kids will love it and it’s also something that most adults can’t resist, at least not for long. Use beanbags for younger kids, even if they only end up throwing them around the backyard.

2. Social Hopping (as I like to refer to it): This all but demands a stylish, versatile bag. I need a bag that works for ANY.THING. From a diaper bag, to handbag, to beach tote, so finding an awesome carryall is my special treat to myself each summer. Besides, let’s be real, as family social coordinator, I deserve it. And so do you! Here’s my latest crush from Michael Kors.
3. Water Works: I blogged about Pool Season earlier this year but now that it’s actually here, make sure you have the essentials. Cute cover-ups, extra beach towels, new shades, sun hats and poolside flip-flops in every color are all in peak season. My favorite places to stock up for the entire family are Old Navy Outlet and Gap Factory Store at Tanger. Be sure to check out the coupon page on TangerOutlets.com before heading out so that you don’t miss any deals!
4. Functional, Flexible Fashions: I’m a diehard “dress for success” advocate and that even, believe it or not, applies in mommyhood. Just like the versatile carryall bag, your summer wardrobe needs to be built for anything. Key pieces that are easy to throw on, comfortable and can be dressed up or down for any occasion are crucial for summer. I repeat, crucial! This also goes for the kiddos but for now, let’s put ourselves first.
When shopping to refresh your closet for summer, find staple pieces like this fun maxi dress that can go from running errands to your afternoon cookouts with a few simple accessories. I’ve seen similar dresses at Ann Taylor Factory Store.

You’ll want to keep your jewelry simple because there’s nothing worse than bulky jewelry that attracts teething toddlers when it’s 95+ degrees. The worst! For evening plans, add a statement bangle or lightweight scarf, and sandals with a little fringe or bling. Then, voila, you’ll look like you spent hours getting ready when you’ve really been playing super hero all day.
Here’s to a fun-filled summer. Pencil in some time for yourself while you’re planning all these outings. You’ll thank me later!
