Over the recent long weekend, I had a front row seat as witness to one of the season’s hottest trends. While at a neighbor’s holiday cookout there were no less than half a dozen women, all of whom were moms my age, sporting the bold bare shoulders look. I immediately thought of two things…1) I missed the dress code memo for this party and 2) I can totally pull off this look. And you can too!
Think about it. All those days spent pushing double strollers, carrying toddlers, lifting infant seats, carting oversized SUV loads of “necessities” to and from grandma and grandpa’s house or playdates, and the countless loads of groceries that you’re unwilling to break into smaller loads because you don’t want to waste time with a second trip to the car, have honed your arms and shoulders into the perfect specimens needed to rock this ultra feminine look. Mommyhood has given you exactly what you need, so thank you Mother Nature. That doesn’t often happen postpartum.
I love, love, LOVE this style!
If you’re still in doubt, let me assuage your fears. Abercrombie, American Eagle and other youth-oriented stores have ample options of beautiful flowy, off-the-shoulder tops but the trick is finding the right balance (we should be pros at this by now, right?) to show off your shoulder silhouette and not look TOO youthful. Leave the midriff to the college girls. I, for one, am not that brave. I actually don’t think I ever have been.
But us, um, 30-somethings, can wear this look with confidence and still feel comfortable and fashionable.
I took an impromptu poll of the ladies at the party to find out where they got their blouses and the most popular stores were Banana Republic, Polo Ralph Lauren, White House Black Market and Ann Taylor, all of which can be found at Tanger!
Even some of the little girls were sporting this trend in true cuteness overload with blouses from Carter’s and Justice.

Dads are, unfortunately, out of luck with this one but they get to take full advantage of the Dad Bod so let’s just call it even, shall we?
I’m going out this week to find some new pieces to proudly show off my mommy guns. Maybe I’ll see you at Tanger!
