The carefree days of summer are here and, for me, that means updating my home decor. Most people like to take on these types of projects in the spring but summer is MY time to freshen things up one room at a time. Admittedly, I tend to be a traditionalist with larger decor pieces and furniture but I’m a trendy gal at heart so I absolutely must have splashes of the latest colors, patterns and fabrics to keep things interesting.
Smooth, flowy silks are all the rage in fashion this summer but, as a mom of young kids, I cringe when I think of pulling out a beautiful, delicate silk blouse or dress because it’s destined to have little people hand prints, apple juice or some other evidence of toddler mischief within the first wearable hour. Total fashion felony!
So, let’s talk sultry silk HOME fashions.
No, not the dusty old centerpieces that you remember from your grandmother’s house. Silk florals have come a long, LONG way in recent years and can be absolutely stunning additions to your foyer table, formal dining area or mantle. If you spend any time on Pinterest, look them up. You’ll be surprised. Promise!
You can easily make these arrangements yourself or, if you’re not really into channeling Martha Stewart, you can find them at Tanger home decor retailers, such as Kirkland’s, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and West Elm.
It’s important for each room in the home to have a couple statement pieces that really draw you in. Draperies are an easy eye-catching way to accomplish this, especially the common areas such as your family or living room.
Just look at how the drapes draw you into the formal living room. Everything else is subtle and sublime but the drapes add a pop of color (even if it’s neutral) and rich texture to the room.
Draperies can be an investment depending on the fabric that you select so choose wisely. If you’re like me and want to update things every couple of years, you’ll want to select a less expensive fabric or even pre-made draperies that can be easily replaced with the changing trends or to suit your tastes.
Another way to update a more classically furnished room is to add a combination of silk and textured throw pillows. These are quite possibly the easiest and best accents you can get for your money. They really dress up a sofa, guest bed or any other sitting area with little to no effort.
Formal Dining Accents
When is the last time you updated your table linens? I’m guilty of still using the ones from my wedding registry all those years ago, but not for much longer! This summer, I’m opting for a formal dining update to add some glam to my dining room. Adding beautiful silk linens and one of those gorgeous floral centerpieces that I mentioned earlier will really dress up any tabletop. Even if you’re into more of the farmhouse table look, silk linens in a neutral color or with a great texture can add a WOW factor to your rustic room.
Updating a few home decor pieces every year will give you an easy way to change the style of any room without breaking the bank, and also a personal project to look forward to every summer. Added bonus, the home decor stores at Tanger Outlets always have hot summer sales so be sure to check out the deals page or download the Tanger app before heading over to your local Tanger.
