Tis the season for youth sports!
Congrats. Your schedule is suddenly filled with practice drop offs, game days, concession stand duties and, for you hard core mommas…Team Mom responsibilities. To those moms, I salute you!
This week’s post is dedicated to helping other moms achieve that coveted Team M.V.M. (Most Valuable Mom) status.
While I’m not well versed in this particular parental responsibility just yet, I thought it would be fun to invite some of the neighborhood moms out for coffee and get the inside scoop.
Here are the top takeaways from the seasoned pros on what makes a great Team Mom.
MAKE A TEAM MOM PLAYBOOK
The moms unanimously agreed that ORGANIZATION IS KEY to being a great Team Mom because the players, families AND coaches come to rely on you for everything.
They recommend creating a Team Mom Playbook with the team roster, contact information, allergies, schedules, etc. and keeping it in a designated area in your office, kitchen or home drop zone so that you always know where to find the information at a moment’s notice. You’ll need it. Frequently.
At the beginning of every season, the Team Moms map out plans for ordering uniforms, fundraising, team pictures, end of season parties and everything in between. They also set up the contact system between the families. These days, it’s group texts or emails versus a phone tree but the same concept applies and someone has to drive it!
Recruit talent from the other parents. You’re not going to be the only one that’s overly enthusiastic about watching your kid(s) take on a new sport and the other parents that are willing to help will make themselves known to you.
Dividing weekly snack responsibilities, starting practice carpools, assigning a scorekeeper, designating a fundraiser chair and selecting a team treasurer are all things that other parents can help you with. And, often, will gladly volunteer for.
A word of caution from the pros… you’re always going to have parents that forget it’s their week for snacks or that it’s their turn to run the concession stand so have an alternative parent on standby.
PREP FOR RAIN OR SHINE
The game must go on so keep your car stocked with all-weather gear and items that you’ll constantly need throughout the season. Top recs include:
- folding chairs
- extra blankets
- first aid kits (fully stocked)
- healthy snacks
- cool rags for hot days
- extra socks (These moms seriously thought of it all!)
Your personal gameday attire is also important. As Team Mom, you’re every person’s go-to source of information. Only your best Athleisure will do! The moms that I chatted with RAVED about the athletic wear from Nike Factory Store and even from fashion retailers like Saks Off 5th, Talbots and WHBM because it’s comfortable for on-the-go AND on-trend no matter the forecast.
They also highly recommend shopping at Tanger (Totally unscripted. Cross my heart.) for all-weather athletic gear for the kids from adidas Outlet, Reebok Outlet Stores, Under Armour Outlet Stores and Champion Outlet Stores.
These are some savvy ladies!
No matter the sport, the moms couldn’t comment enough about the bond youth sports creates within their families. It was great to see that love, devotion and competitive drive first-hand, and it has me eagerly awaiting the day my littles can suit up and take the field.
Until then, get out there and put these tips to good use for me.
