The new school year means new routines, after school activities, homework, carpools and a plethora of other events added to our daily to-do lists. But it doesn’t have to mean stress-filled and frantic schedules if you…
Get Ahead of the Game.
As moms, we are always thinking ahead so this should come as no surprise. Right? Unfortunately, it’s one of those cliche, “easier said than done” type of things.
However, getting ahead of the chaos that back to school (BTS) brings by making changes to your family’s routine early on and preparing your home will help make for a much more seamless transition. And save (some) of your sanity!
Here are a few tips for getting back into the BTS groove:
Prepping for BTS
Get your kids’ BTS shopping list ready early by taking inventory of things that you already have, purging clothes that they’ve outgrown and listing out exactly what you need to buy. These small banner sticky notes from francesca’s outlet can make this a bit more fun when making lists…even have the kiddos pitch in!
If you haven’t started yet, no worries. There’s still time and lucky for you, tax-free weekends are coming up. You can shop all their favorite brands in one place at Tanger!

The jolt of early mornings compared to the relaxed summer mornings of the past few weeks/months can be a difficult adjustment for the whole family.
Start easing yourself and the kids into their new schedule a few weeks prior to the first day of school. Gradually enforcing earlier bedtimes will lead to less resistance from the littles and help encourage more successful, tardy slip free mornings. (Hint: grabbing a cute calendar like the one below makes all the difference)!
It’s no secret that kids thrive on routines and getting them back into a good routine for the school year is guaranteed to make everyone more successful.
Have a plan for your morning, after school and bedtime routines, and add a dash of fun so they think it’s a game.
Mornings: Give them their own alarm clock and incentivize getting ready on time. If they get up without your nagging (uh…gentle persuasion) they can watch 15 mins of their favorite show before leaving.
Music is also a great way to get energy levels up in the morning!
After School: Have set times for school work, play and screen time, and keep them posted nearby as a reminder.
Set up a specific area that is just for them to complete their homework assignments and it’ll help limit distractions. Having these designated areas is critical in my household…even with a pre-schooler.
Bedtime: Have them help choose and lay out their clothes for the next day. Be strict about bedtime and use the same alarm/incentive technique from their morning routines.
Looking good means feeling good, so make sure they’re comfortable with the following day’s outfit ahead of time. Shop TangerStyle Fall now through August 20th for an extra 25% OFF back to school fashions.
In my previous BTS Like A Boss post, I suggested creating a command center for important documents, bookbags, etc. to have everything grab-and-go ready. Give everything a home and you’ll buy yourself time to finish that cup of coffee while it’s still warm.
Make Time for Yourself
Yes, you’ll probably be prepping lunches or your to-do list for the next day, but give yourself a cutoff to allow for time to do something that you enjoy. Exercise, catch up on your fave DVR’d show, read or just spend time with the hubby.
Put these few tips in play for your family and you’ll be on BTS autopilot in no time!
