Name a more recognized phrase than, “the freshman fifteen”… Getting thrown into a new environment has countless challenges—fitness and healthy eating being one of them. And it doesn’t stop after freshman year. Staying healthy in college is a loaded challenge. I still have to make health conscious choices and I’m going into my senior year! My advice is to start as soon as possible to get yourself acclimated and into a routine. My tips for staying healthy in college are below!
No. 1 | Group fitness for the win!
Get a group of friends together and head to a class at your campus gym. There’s something way more fun about working out together. Did you play sports in high school? Consider joining a club team in college. Really need some motivation? It never hurts to pick up some cute workout gear to motivate yourself to put it to use! No. 2 | Don’t buy junk.
It’s so tempting to stock up on cookies and candy in between classes or at the grocery store. Steer clear of unhealthy food aisles and pack healthy snacks to take to class. Some of my favorite healthy treats are almonds, yogurt, and bananas! I find that I eat healthier if I keep myself busy. The second I start binge watching Netflix, all bets are off!
No. 3 | Take the scenic route to class.
Elevator? No way! Take the stairs to the 3rd floor instead. There might be a shortcut route across campus, but if you have a few extra minutes don’t take it. Challenge yourself to get your steps in for the day. If your only workout is walking around campus, make it count!
No. 4 | Water, please.
Drink more water! Staying hydrated is key to leading a healthier lifestyle.
#TangerTip: get a large, insulated water bottle so your water stays cold and you don’t have to refill constantly.

No. 5 | Cut yourself some slack.
If you eat a hot dog on gameday, it isn’t the end of the world! Learn to balance and plan ahead. If you know you’re in for some unhealthy treats, consider eating a healthier meal for lunch or add an extra workout to your week. If you can’t squeeze that in just know that it’s perfectly common to gain weight in college. Don’t stress about it too much—just do your best!
#TangerTip: download an app like My Fitness Pal to easily track your eating habits even when eating out!
