Class may be stressful, but just wait until you get invited to meet the parents! You found your match and it’s serious enough to meet the most important people in their life. Now it’s time to find the outfit. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t ripped apart my closet looking for the perfect “meet the parents” look a time or two. There has to be a balance between pulling together a thoughtful ensemble and not looking like you tried too hard. Here are my fail-proof tips for what to wear when meeting the parents.
1. Class Act Dress
You’re the star of the show! Be sure to pick a conservative dress: neckline, length, and fit. I love this ultra-feminine, yet casual dress. It’s dressy enough, but nothing too crazy. I love going with a dress for any event with my significant other’s parents—it always feels more proper to me. The color and tie detail also keep the dress within my personal style.

2. Sensible Shoes
Adding a little bit of a heel to any shoe elevates the overall look completely. I think this heeled sandal is the best combination of dressy yet casual. These shoes happen to be oldies but goodies, but I’ve linked to a similar pair below!
3. Handy Handbag
Bringing something practical is key! I love this blue and white clutch to add some dimension to this solid colored dress.

4. Justifiable Jewels
Less is more here. Pile on one or two of your fave go-to jewelry pieces. This little pop of yellow in these earrings pulls together this entire outfit.

Now that you have the perfect look, here are my tips for winning over the parents!
- Thoughtful gifts. It doesn’t have to be something big—flowers always impress. Whether they’re traditional or not, they’ll appreciate the thought and effort! It’s a considerate gesture to get off on the right foot immediately!
- Attentive listening. Don’t respond back to each statement with a parallel thought—really listen and ask questions. People love to feel like you want to understand them better!
- Manners matter. Help them clear the table after dinner, say please and thank you, and offer to help them cook, etc.
- Be yourself. As cliché as it sounds, just be yourself. It’s the only way to guarantee they’ll like you for you.
