Moving off campus? Count me in!
After spending two years living on campus I was beyond ready for the extra space that off campus living provides. There’s definitely a process to find the right place and it can seem overwhelming at first! Have no fear—I have a ton of tips to share to make your apartment hunt smooth sailing!
Find Your Roommates
If you plan on living with other people it’s time to lock down who your top picks are. Make sure to talk out the living situation—Are some people OK with sharing a bathroom? What amenities does everyone have on their wish list? How close do you want to be to campus? Talking everything through will not only help narrow down who’s compatible, but ensures that everyone is on the same page before starting the search.
Set a Budget
Money makes the world go round! Chat with your friends and decide what price point you are all comfortable with for monthly rent.
Tanger Tip: I divided the cost of my dorm by the months I lived there to determine a ballpark rent price for my college town.
Talk it Out
The easiest way to find a new apartment besides using Google is to talk to the people you go to school with. Ask what they love and hate about their apartment complexes and compare against what you’re finding online. Keep in mind that some complexes offer furnished options with utilities included. That might affect monthly price, but could save money in the long run plus the pain of furnishing an apartment and splitting those costs between roommates. Pay attention to flyers around campus advertising places to live too!
Tour Your Options
Once you’ve narrowed it down to some options be sure to tour the properties. Pay attention to the leasing staff and management—It really makes a difference when you live somewhere with committed and kind staff!
Once you’ve picked a place it’s time to set down a security deposit! Make sure to write down important due dates and take the necessary steps needed for getting paperwork to them in time. You don’t want to lose your perfect place to someone else after all that work!
