The semester is winding down and I’m super excited for summer! Summer is a great time to wind down, but also the perfect chance to get some professional experience under your belt. I know searching for an internship can be stressful so I wanted to break down the process!
Here are some of my tried and true tips!
Rethink Your Resume
We all think our resume is star studded, but is yours actually up to par? Make sure your headings stand out and that everything is aligned to the left hand side. Use bullets with action verbs like “spearheaded” and “created” to start the sentences off. Spend some time updating your resume and use resources like Etsy and Canva for the perfect template.
Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letters
Recruiters spend an average of 7 seconds or less looking at resumes. Make sure yours gets through the applicant tracking systems most companies use by tailoring your resume to each job listing. Oh, and don’t slack on cover letters! Connect your experience directly to what they want from an employee. This cute planner from FRANCESCA’S is a great way to keep track of what internships you’ve applied for! I love the motivation!

Reach Out to Your Contacts
Networking is key. If there’s a company you are interested in, reach out to someone you know that works there. There’s no shame in asking family, friends, past coworkers, professors, and neighbors if they have any contacts that might be worth reaching out to. Trust me, they’ll feel flattered you asked!
Use LinkedIn
Stay up to date and connected with alumni, professors, and classmates. Make sure your profile is current and includes all pertinent information. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a recruiter at a company you’re interested in. Make sure to get a professional headshot to make a great impression! This navy blazer from J.CREW FACTORY is a great to have for headshots. It’s structured but also stylish!
